YouTube Channel: John John Florence

If the name John John Florence sounds familiar, it’s because we mentioned him as one of the Surfers you Should be Following on Instagram. John John Florence is 27-year-old Hawaii native. He is a 2x World Champion and is considered to be one of the greatest and most beloved surfers of all time , putting him in the realm of Kelly Slater, Andy Irons and Sunny Garcia. Sadly, John John was injured during his 2019 season, taking him out of title contention. He is looking to make a strong debut again in 2020 (once the season starts after Covid -19, and represent Hawaii and the US in the postponed 2021 Olympics in Japan).

John John Florence has gained a huge following thanks in large part to his YouTube channel. Some of his most popular surf films on YouTube include “Begin Again”, “Done”, “Again” and our all time favorite surf film, “A View from a Blue Moon” (you can watch “A View from a Blue Moon” free here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um-VPhqsFks).

These films are shot on location in places like Hawaii, Tahiti, Africa and Australia. They feature incredible cinematography, accompanied by great music, and showcase John John’s insane abilities. In addition his films, his YouTube series “TWELVE” follows his 2017 World Tour career, showing each of the tour locations, waves and culture. It is a cool inside look at the life of a pro surfer.

STAB

Our next favorite free place to watch edits, films, series and find new content is stabmag.com, also known as STAB. Here you can watch enough free vidoes to get you through Covid-19. Besides videos, there are articles, pictures, products reviews and of course surfing gossip, making it a good overall resource for surfers.

To find free films, search under the Cinema section or using the search bar. Some of our favorites free films on STAB include:

  • Stab In the Dark: a yearlys series that chooses one surfer to test a variety of shaper’s boards. The surfer doesn’t know what brands he is riding nor does the shaper know what surfer they are shaping for.

  • Chapter 11: this features Dane Reynolds and is a 47 minute film with insane surfing

  • The Dock: if you are in the mood for something funkier, then check out this film.  STAB anchored a 100 foot dock in the middle of a surf break which allowed pro surfers to experiment with the concept of running on the dock to catch waves rather than paddling. You’ll also see surfers jumping the the dock on a wave and much more! It is very entertaining!

Red Bull

Red Bull, yes like the drink, has a great series called “All In”. It is free to watch on YouTube or on Redbull.com. The series follows the lives of different pro surfers on the World Tour. Viewers get an inside look at a pro surfer’s life including their families, traveling, their results, the pressure of competition and much more. It is definitely worth the watch.

Paid Films

If you don’t mind shelling out a few bucks to watch good surf content, then we suggest “Kissed by God” or “Momentum Generation”. Both are more serious surf films. “Kissed by the Gods” is free if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, if not it will cost you about $10. “Momentum Generation” is free if you have HBO, if not it will cost you about $5. Both are very much worth the purchase and watch!
