5 Free Surf Films You Can Watch During Quarantine

We wish more than ever we could be catching waves and enjoying the beautiful weather we’ve had lately, but, unfortunately, that is not the case. Quarantine is a great time to catch up on some spring cleaning and projects around the house, but no one really wants to do that. Chances are you truly just want to kick back and catch up on all of your favorite shows and movies. If you are like us, you probably have already done that and have watched all of Netflix (including Tiger King), so what else is there to watch? Here are five free surf films you can watch during quarantine.

1. Elude

Elude is a film by Perry Gershkow and Noah Wegrich. This film was three years in the making and is one for cinematography lovers amongst us. It is very cinematic and artistic. It features insane high performance surfing by some of Central California’s finest surfers. Overall, an incredibly well done film.

2. I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night

This is a film by the Deus Ex Machina crew. It is an awesome short film about motorcycles, travel, performance surfing, and some beautiful long boarding. This film has something for everyone and is a masterpiece. We highly recommend watching it!

3. Desert Blue

Desert Blue was filmed in the West Oz desert during a 37 day camping trip with a group of friends. It features a great soundtrack and beautiful scenery. The last section of the film is pretty mind blowing. While it’s not the most cinematic film ever made, it has good vibes and makes you want to do the same exact trip (although it’d be hard for us to relate to some of those waves). If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, we recommend fast forwarding to 20:30 and picking it up from there.

4. Cult of Freedom

This is a two for one film from Joe G (possibly the greatest surf film director ever, check out Globe: Year Zero and Strange Rumblings in Shangri-La). Both of his previous films are worth paying for, but if you don’t want to pay, his new online short film series “Cult of Freedom” is pretty amazing. The Australia part of the film is a great adventure short with insane surfing, and the Taj part is pure surf pump up. No one is better than Taj.

5. Imogen by Morgan Maassen

A short film about Imogen Caldwell, a blonde girl who grew up in West Oz and absolutely charges. Filmed over a year and spanning several continents and environments, this is a cinematic beauty. Not packed with surfing, but we think everyone can appreciate the cinematography, editing, and feel this short gives off. It is well worth the watch, and while your at it you might as well check out the rest of Morgan’s work. It is all on his Vimeo page and worth the watch.
