The Benefits of Surfing for Kids

We all know surfing has many great benefits for adults. From relaxation to a hobby with friends, it’s a great way for adults to get up and moving, while doing something they enjoy. But what about for kids? Is surfing really that great for kids?  We may be a little biased, but we believe surfing has many benefits for kids. Below are some of the reasons why surfing is a great outlet for kids to enjoy.

Great Cardiovascular Workout

According to data from the CDC, one in five children are obese. Additionally, obese children are more likely to be obese as an adult, which can lead to various health issues including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and others.

It’s important to keep your children active early on. Finding something they love to do that gets them up and moving is important. Surfing is a great cardiovascular workout for children to enjoy. If you’ve ever been on a surfboard, you know how much of a workout paddling and surfing can be.

A Sport They Will Stick With

Unlike other recreational activities, like football and soccer where kids will eventually age out of the sports systems, surfing is a sport that kids will never grow out of. It is something they can continue doing throughout their teenage years, college years and adulthood. When you introduce children to surfing, you can introduce them to a lifetime sport.

Teaches Kids Balance and Coordination

Surfing is a fun and exciting way to teach kids balance and coordination. Balance and coordination are crucial life skills that children need to maintain healthy development. Balance and coordination will help children not only become better athletes, but also build self-esteem as children are able to do more tasks independently, like riding a bike without training wheels.

Anxiety and Stress Relief

As much as surfing can be an anxiety and stress reliever for adults, it can also provide the same value for children. Children can experience a lot of stress and anxiety due to school and things they are exposed to in life. According to Understood.org, some signs your child may be experiencing stress and anxiety include: frequent headaches and stomach aches, restless, fidgeting, hyperactivity, tense muscles and trouble falling asleep among others.

Surfing can be a great way for children to channel this anxiety and stress. It’s a great way for them to burn off excess energy that could be converted to stress or anxiousness.

When it comes to activities for kids, we believe surfing should be at the top of the list. Not only do we offer summer camps for kids, we also offer surf lessons throughout the year for children. Even if your child isn’t looking to take up surfing as a lifelong hobby, our surf lessons will provide skills and an outlet that will be beneficial for years to come.
